Group Educational
Therapy Model
NILD Group Educational Therapy (GET) is a unique intervention for students
who struggle to learn as students are guided to think and develop tools for
independent learning in a group setting. Each week, students in GET
receive two sessions composed of three to five students for intensive educational
therapy led by a certified NILD educational therapist with special GET training.
Students are not placed in GET groups according to age; rather, students are
grouped according to skill-level.
GET incorporates five core techniques which are designed to address students’
specific areas of difficulty and to improve their overall ability to think, reason and
process information. GET emphasizes basic skill areas such as reading,
writing, spelling and math, applying reasoning skills within each area into
fast-paced 80-minute sessions. Each session is characterized by interactive
dialogue and group collaboration as therapists mediate learning and
facilitate a transformational learning environment where students are
challenged to think and to employ strategies in a safe and collaborative session.
Through therapist guidance and the mutual encouragement and help of one
another, students gain a sense of academic competence and independence
while also learning to successfully work with others as they learn from and
with their GET peers.
